POWER TRIP

Power- the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events.

The concept of power is something that has bewildered me and questioned the make up of my own morals and value. The idea of influencing a mass following of people through your own ideas, and then those ideas becoming the reason for your power, and then that power becomes a measurement of one’s success through money or tangible goods is something that I truly cannot come to terms with.

When I see some of my heroes such as Michael Jackson stating “And I remember going to the record studio and there was a park across the street and I’d see all the children playing and I would cry because it would make me sad that I would have to work instead.” or Kanye West stating “Do you want to marginalize me until I’m out of my moment”. The importance for power or good ideas becomes more and more apparent to me as an individual. In the music industry record labels are the power controllers and even with individuals such as Chance the Rapper making a stance on the independent artist scene, the most traditional way of becoming a musician involves being part of a record label. A record label essentially purchases your ideas from you to distribute to the world. A messenger. And at the forefront of this all there’s a measurement for power, that cannot be ignored; Money. The more you have of it, the greater the amount of measurable power you have.

Essentially for me though, power is confusing. Individuals in my opinion are not powerful, but are a mere puppet for the ideas that they bring into this world. Your ideas make you who you are, your thoughts and ideas that you convey, make you the human being that you want to become. Power is only applicable if people take interest in you, and choose to invest in you. So then it makes me think, who is the most powerful person in the world… Well from my point of view- You are, as an individual, every human being has the same level of power in this world, its just some of us choose to invest that power into the ideas of other people instead.
